two stories of modern living with a roof deck integrated with a heritage cottage...

We worked closely with the owner, a carpenter and builder, and his wife on this project to get the absolute most out of this 85m2 corner site with an existing heritage listed workers cottage.

The design phase required extensive meeting with City of Yarra to come to an amicable agreement about the amount of retention of the heritage dwelling and how it tied into the new modern extension.

We took the approach of not trying to match the old heritage house, rather build on it and over it with a highly contrasting material of zinc cladding and timber panelling to provide a hard definition of old and new. We opened up the site as much as possible with the new open planned living space and, as has become a regular theme since, a roof deck adds valuable entertaining space and really helps maximise the sites yield. There are spectacular views across to the MCG and surrounds.

This building is an absolute tribute to the owner putting in his blood, sweat and tears to get it such a clean finish. His craft as a carpenter has shone through and speaks volumes to the quality of work he is so passionate about.

Due or Completion on 2016. More images to come.
