Burst Street

Burt Street is an inspired renovation that combines the heritage details of the existing home with contemporary detailing, creating a home that effortlessly blends into the vernacular of Fremantle.

What started as a project with a modest goal to create a functional family home soon began to evolve into a highly layered and substantial renovation and extension. It creates a purposeful and clear distinction between ‘old’ and ‘new’, maintaining the heritage facade and certain heritage details while injecting a modern feel into the back extension

The renovations create a sense of flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. The design re-orientates the living spaces flowing onto the backyard while the use of glass throughout the home and a large curved glass sliding door absorbs as much northern light as possible. Similarly, the kitchen was expanded, becoming the largest space in the home.

Materials interact with the home’s original period detailing. The warmth of the timber and elegant interior design choices soften the raw polished concrete and industrial tones of black steel.

The contemporary house feels open yet intimate, modern yet charming – an example of the beauty that can come from considered juxtapositions.
